Penis Anatomy
The penis is a long cylindrical shaped member which is the man’s reproductive organ. The normal length of the man’s penis is around 6 inches when erect. Inside of the penis is two cylindrical tubes that run the length of the shaft. These tubes contain a spongy-like material which is corpus spongiosm. This material is mainly composed of tissue, which fills with blood when the penis becomes erect. This material continues into the tip of the penis, which is called the ’glans.’ Running through the inside of the penis in the corpus spongiosm is the urethra. The urethra is the passageway for urine and semen to leave the body. The urethra is like a small tube which runs all the way through the shaft to the end of the penis. The urethra opens in a slit at the end of the glans.
Also inside of the penis is collagen, muscle, and elastic muscular fiber. At the base of the glans, where the glans overhangs and hooks onto the actual shaft of the penis is the corpora cavernosa. This is part of the penis which in engorged with blood during erection. This part of the penis that is composed mainly of muscle, collagen and elastic fibers.
In the urethra tube, there are small openings for the allowance of seminal fluid, urine, and sperm. Seminal fluid is mixed with the sperm before ejaculation. This allows for smooth movement out of the body. The sperm comes from the vas deferens, which are two tubes that extend from each testicle to the urethra. When the sperm is composed inside the testis, it travels through the tubes into the vas deferens. These tubes are what is normally cut and tied during a male vasectomy.
The testicles are suspended on the outside of the body by the spermatic cord. The testicles are inside of the scrotum, which is like a sack or bag. The scrotum’s purpose is to create male sex hormones and sperm. The scrotum is made of skin and muscle. The scrotum also protects the sperm by keeping it at the correct temperature. The sperm is highly sensitive to temperature, and the scrotum maintains the temperature of the sperm.
The outside of the penis is covered with a very thin layer of skin. This skin hangs loose when the penis is flaccid, and is stretched thin and tightly over the erect penis.
Here are some names of certain parts of the penis and where they are located:
The part of the penis where the glans and the shaft meet is called the ’corona’ or crown.
The two sponge-like tubes where most of the blood is pumped to the penis during erection are called corpera cavernosa.
The epididymus is a sort of holding spot for the sperm. This is where the sperm waits after it has been made and before it leaves the penis through ejaculation.
The glans is the bulbous tip of the penis which has the slit like opening to the urethra. This slit opening is where the semen and urine leave the male’s body at.
The frenum is the band of elastic type skin that connects the glans of the penis to the shaft.
The urethra is the tube that the urine and semen travel through in order to leave the body.
The anatomy of the penis is very complex and each part of the penis works together during sexual intercourse or ejaculation to produce the sperm, which ensures the survival of people.
