Delayed Ejaculation

In a normal sexual encounter, a man who is actively thrusting and trying to achieve orgasm, can do so in anywhere between two and four minutes. If a man is actively trying to climax and can’t, he has a condition called delayed ejaculation, which is the opposite of premature ejaculation. Delayed ejaculation is sometimes called ejaculatory incompetence and generally occurs due to a psychological problem, rather than a physical problem. There are certain medications that are an exception to the rule, such as Prozac and Guanethidine, that can cause this problem. It can also be caused by a stroke or a form of nerve damage to the spinal cord. Most often, however, it is caused by psychological problems.

One of the more interesting, and frustrating, things about delayed ejaculation, is that often a man suffering from it can achieve climax through masturbation, but not through sexual intercourse. There are many theories and reasons for this to occur. Sometimes it begins because a man becomes used to masturbating and can not achieve the same feeling through intercourse. Other times it occurs due to emotional problems. Some men with delayed ejaculation have a hard time showing emotions, while others were raised in a strict manner, sometimes a strict religious manner, and have a difficult time letting go of the control.

This can be a very frustrating condition for both men and women. Women may enjoy the condition, at first, as it means that their partner will be able to sustain an erection for a much longer amount of time. Pleasure turns to irritation, though, after thirty or forty-five minutes has passed and the man has not reached his orgasm. Women feel as though it is their fault, and men feel ashamed that they can only climax through masturbation.

Unlike erectile dysfunction, there is no pill to help a man achieve orgasm. As long as there is not a medical problem causing the condition, men are encouraged to see a sex therapist about the situation. Treatment often consists of the partners working together to relieve the symptoms. A classic treatment will have the man masturbating in front of his partner to begin with, and then will have the woman taking over the masturbating for the man. The final stage comes when the man and woman get the man to the point of climax, and he does so inside his partner.
